Edge of Seventeen: A movie review

Hey friends! I just watched Edge of Seventeen and wanted to do a review on it! This will be a less than formal review as it fits the theme of the movie.

Nadine is a typical Seventeen year old girl. She feels alone. Shes hormonal and all she wants is to feel loved and not alone. At 13 Nadine and her twin brother Darrian along with their mother are struck by tragedy when their father/husband dies suddenly. After that it seems Nadine, naturally becomes closed off and pessimistic about the world.

At 17 she is in love with a guy who has no idea who she is, her mother favors Darrian, her best friend begins a romantic relationship with Darrian, there is a guy who likes her, Erwin, she isnt interested and now her only friend is her History teacher… Things seem to begin to spiril for our heroine as a salacious text can get her into trouble.

I absolutely loved this movie. It was so honest and heartbreaking while being funny and quirky. Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine and she made me remember what it was like to be 17 and think i was the only person in the world with problems and to have that empty ache in my heart of feeling like i was always alone. I really connected with Nadine emotionally. She made me laugh and cry and feel nostalgic about the shittiest age in my life!!

i highly recommend this movie. It will make you laugh and cry. It pulls at your heart, it makes you nostalgic and its just so good.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 a five star film!!!

10 more movies I adore

Hi friends! I have been on overdrive lately with school and life in general! I wanted to a fun post that wasn’t emotionally heavy like my last one so here are 10 more movies that I adore. Many of you may not know these movies or maybe you didn’t know I loved them as much as I do, so here we go!

2962347-southpaw-ost.jpg

10. Southpaw. I am a HUGE sports movie fan. I have seen dozens in my life and to this day I am still absolutely in love with them. Southpaw is a drama about a man named Billy Hope who is a famous and undefeated boxer from Hells Kitchen. With his wife in his corner, his daughter at home and a lavish life he is on top of the world, until tragedy strikes and he is left with only his drive to win again. This movie was a LONG awaited one for me. I am head over heels in love with Jake Gyllenhaal and his talent is a force. I knew that when this movie was released that it would be one of my favorites and I was right. Not only is the story great and heart wrenching but the cast is something to be celebrated.

large_4mxcgSYyPwrgS9VVUIH1Uit0kj4.jpg

9. Divine Secrets of the YAYA Sisterhood.  This is a movie that I watch frequently and I can say most of the lines verbatem. Its a coming of age story for all ages about a group of women whose friendship withstands the good, the bad and the ugly of life. With the talent of James Garner, Ellen Burstyn, Ashley Judd, Sandra Bullock and Maggie Smith this story will leave you happy and sad and still trying to figure it all out once its over.

the-wolf-of-wall-street-leonardo-dicaprio-poster

8. The Wolf of Wall Street. I had to choose another Leonardo DiCaprio film as per usual! I had extremely high expectations for this movie as it starred my favorite Actor and one of my all time Favorite Directors Martin Scorsese. In the past the two of them have made cinematic gold with movies such as The Aviator, The Departed and Shutter Island. My expectations were beyond met with this story of a man whose dream of money and success are far greater than he expected (they also were illegal). This is one of my favorite preformances of Leo’s as I think he embodied each phase of this mans success with grace and true talent.

370606-the-lost-boys.jpg

7.The Lost Boys. I am a shameless 80’s movie fanatic while my husband is much less one and much less of a movie buff than I am however we both frequent The Lost Boys. This movie follows a family who moves to a coastal town that is inhabited by teenagers who are children of the night. Being a vampire has never been cooler when Keifer Sutherland is the leader of the pack. This was the first movie I saw that Corey Haim was in and it was love at first sight!

large_2m6cKaANOJyJgQpBWuxWaQ7PXdv.jpg

6. Riding in Cars with Boys. This is another movie I watch alot. It was one that came out when I was in junior high school and when It finally aired on HBO i made sure to watch it as much as I could. It was the first movie that I felt Drew Barrymore really let go and showed off her true talent. This story is a bio pic about a women who tells her story of growing up all too fast when she becomes pregnant in highschool and raising her son Jason, her junkie husband Ray and herself all the while writting this book that she narrates.

My_Week_with_Marilyn_Poster.jpg

5. My Week with Marilyn. If you know me, you will know that I am not a fan of the iconic Marilyn Monroe. While I think that she was gorgeous, I think that that is where the talent ends. However in watching this movie I was overwhelmed with a bunch of emotions. I saw a woman who was such a force but who inside thought nothing of herself. I saw her struggle with her techniques and methods and dealing with the impending doom of her failing marriage to the famous playwrite Arthur Miller. Michelle Williams was a stunning adaptation of the starlet and captured her to her very core. There is a scene where she is greeted by her friend and she says “forgive my horrible face” as she had been crying and wearing no makeup, and in that moment I saw a woman who literally struggled with herself everyday.

thC7Z25Q7H4. Silver Linings Playbook. Here is another movie that I didnt see until all of its hype died down and Oh my gosh this is one movie that will go down in history. It follows a man who is institutionalized and when he is let out he meets a widow who is equally as damaged as him and how a dance competition can make two people fall in love. It is one that you really sit back and think about once the credits begin to roll.

th6OSNVJ5B.jpg3. Shutter Island. All I can say about this is WOW! This is one of Leo’s darkest preformances as he portrays a Agent looking for a murderer in an asylum on an island. You see him struggle with his own sanity as the film continues until you finally find out the truth and BAM! You are slapped in the face with an inceredible twist! I saw this isn theaters with my husband and he called all the twists (or so he says) and was unimpressed but I walked out in awe at how utterly amazing the entire movie was and how deep Leo had to get into this character.

how to make an american quilt.jpg2. How to Make an American Quilt. I remember being a 8 year old girl and watching this movie with my mama. If you have seen it you know that it is a movie that celebrates the lives of a group of women who tell their stories through the eyes of Finn plyed by Winona Ryder. It was the first movie I watched where these women dealt with so much heartache and still came back 10 times stronger. Each woman fell in love, lost love and found love in another form later in life and it really showed me that through greif and success, love and loss, only you can make your own future.

tombstone.jpg

  1. Tombstone. This picture speaks for itself. Tombstone is one of the first Westerns I ever watched when I was a kid. As you know by now my parents F@#$%^& rocked and allowed me to watch alot of movies because they too are major movie buffs. I remember thinking that these 4 men were the toughest guys in the world. Based on a true story of Wyatt Earp, Tombstone is still to this day one of my favorites. Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday is probably in my top 10 all time favorite characters and if you have seen him you know why. He takes the role to an entirly different level and I dont think it will ever be matched.

I hope you enjoyed this post. More fun to come!

The Jane Austen Book Club

Hi everyone. Its a Lazy sunday and I am watching one of my all time favorite movies. Its about 5 women in the Sacramento area who are all on different paths but all in need of something similar.

Jocelyn dealing with grief

Prudie dealing with a younger man and her distant husband

Bernadette a free loving hippie in need some girl power

Sylvia, a woman dealing with her failed marriage

Allegra, the youngest of the group and somehow one of the wisest. Helping her mother deal with her separation.

These five warriors decide to re-read the novels of Jane Austen. Each book somehow relating to the change in their lives ultimately helping them come to terms and begin to grow.

This is an amazing movie and I am looking to get my hands on the book. I personally tend not to like movies and books with so much “girl power” however… In the case of this movie I would not have it any other way. What I love so much is these women take books that they are already familiar with and read them again for discussion. I find book clubs so profound, when done right. Its amazing to have a group of people come together to read something that may or may not be new material and discussing how it makes them feel. What they loved, what they hated. In my opinion, a book club for a woman is the best way to have some camaraderie with someone of the same sex.

It has always been a dream of mine to head a book club. I have “half-assed” tried to get a book club together but its hard to get all of the schedules down for meetings, and hosting the meetings (especially when I live nowhere near anybody)…  I hope to one day have the ultimate book club. I crave that intellectual conversation that comes with reading a book. I want the arguments, and the head nods. I want all of it.

I am in a book club online with a bunch of people and we read books by indie authors. I love this club. What I want most in the world is to have my own and choose books that make you think, make you laugh, make you love to hate a character. I want that camaraderie.

New years resolution maybe…???

Suicide Squad: A movie review

suicidesquadmovielogo600_size3.jpg

Hey everyone! I just got home from a date with my husband. We finally got to go and see the long awaited Suicide Squad

Director: David Ayer

Release Date: August 5 2016

Suicide Squad is a story of 6 criminals who are assembled to take on an entity and end what they call WWIII. Amanda Waller played by Viola Davis is the agent who gets this Motley Crew together. She choose 6 bad people who she “believes can do some good.”

A hitman with a heart, DeadShot played by Will Smith

A psychiatrist who goes 5150 for love, Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie

A gangster with a hot temper, Diablo played by Jay Hernandez

An Aussie with a good arm, Boomerang played by Jai Courtney

An animal, Killer Croc played by Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje

A sword wielding widow, Katana played by Karen Fukuhara

All of them are in a battle against an ancient witch, who was released from her hiding place by a young woman June Moone, played by Cara Delevingne. One the witch or as she is called, The Enchantress is released she can wreak havoc on the world, if she has her heart. Thankfully Amanda Waller holds that, until Enchantress calls upon her brother to retrieve her heart so they can become Gods once again.

The motive is clear, defeat Enchantress and the Suicide Squad will have benefits while they finish their sentences. One of the Squad has something more on her mind… Harley is trying to get back to her Puddin’ The Joker, Played by Jared Leto.

Okay now that you have some back story I can get to the review. This movie has been on my mind since I first heard pre productions rumors over a year ago. I am hardcore Harley fan and I have followed her since the 90’s when she was first introduced in Batman The Animated Series. She is not a historical comic character, or at least she wasnt until the 90’s, so when I saw that she would be in this movie, I knew no matter what i would love her and I did! She did not disappoint and was absolutely perfect!

margot-harleyquinn-042816sp.jpg

Jared Leto… While I absolutely love him, he butchered this role. I was one of the few giving him the benefit if the doubt saying that he could really make this role his own… He did not deliver. However, his chemistry with Harley was the stuff of dreams. They were the perfect poison when together.

the-joker_0.jpg

Deadshot, I have to say stole the show! His drive, his attitude and his love for his daughter was a force to be reckoned with. He really carried all of the characters minus Harley.

5361001-esquadrão-suicida-pistoleiro.jpg

As far as the rest of the squad, I think they could have done without them. They were not very memorable in my opinion.

Overall I give the movie itself a 5/10. While it has been long awaited and the idea is great, the execution was not what I had hoped…

The characters are what made the movie, even the irrelevant ones, and I give them a 9/10! It is because of Deadshot and Harley that I really enjoyed this movie!!! I do plan on buying it when it becomes available so that I can continue to watch one of my favorite characters EVER over and over!

An Actor Ahead of his time

Hey everyone. I am sitting in my livingroom watching a movie. I can’t tell you what movie it is until I describe just how amazing he is.

He was born November 11 1974 in Hollywood California. At an early age he knew he wanted to be an actor. At age 5 he was kicked off his first job for being disruptive. In 1991 he landed a role on the hit show Growing Pains.  By 1993 he played a mentally handicapped teenager next to Johnny Depp in which he was nominated for his first Oscar and Golden Globe. But it was 1996 where he hit the big time as Romeo Montague in Baz Luhrmann’s rendition of William Shakespeare Romeo+Juliet. This was the first movie I watched and knew that he was one of the most amazing actors alive. At 8 years old I believed he would go far, and I was right!

leo-d-leonardo-dicaprio-omfg-romeo-and-juliet-Favimcom-212718_zpsda659233.jpg

Leonardo DiCaprio is amazing! He is my favorite actor of all time! He can literally play anything and when he commits to a role, he really commits. I can remember being a child and telling all my friends (who were not allowed to watch most anything outside of kid movies) how beautiful he was and how he was going to be known as “one of the greats”. Since I have been a movie buff my whole life, many people tend to not take what I say seriously because I like most movies. I have to say that he really is one of the greats and his talent has gone unnoticed by many for years and years now. He just won his first Oscar at the 2015 Oscars for his role in The Revenant. I understand why he won but I look back on his filmography and I can name 5 others that should have won him Oscars as well

He has the ability to make you fall in love, make you cry, and make you laugh. His talent is so out of this world that I believe he will be compared to actors such as Gregory Peck, Robert Redford and Marlon Brando.

I hope that if he ever sees this (which will never happen) but if it did he would know how big of a fan I am and how long I have been one. It is now 20 years since I first saw Romeo+Juliet and to this day I still get excited to watch his movies and see just how amazing he really is!

By the Sea: a movie review

By the Sea

Directed by: Angelina Jolie

Release date: December 9 2015

Starring: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

This is a story of the two most unhappy people in the world…

Roland, a man with a passion for ink and paper. A drink in hand. A cigarette burning. His process is to leave by day, struggle to form any kind of story and return at night, contentious and belligerent

Vanessa, a woman above it all. Stoic, beautiful and harboring a secret that cannot cross her lips for if it does it will break the one wall she has left. The wall that is keeping everyone out including Roland

Set in the mid 1970’s in France we follow Roland and Vanessa through a span of time in which this couple who seem to have it all, have actually lost it all. They have lost themselves and each other. They move into a picturesque flat by the sea, so that Roland may once again find his voice and write another novel. During the day while he is drinking and trying to write Vanessa is left in the flat, alone and unhappy. In the next room a young couple, newlyweds have begun their honeymoon. Vanessa can hear their cries of passion and we begin to see a little more of what could be plaguing her. Unbeknownst to Roland, Vanessa had found a peep hole near their bed where an old pipe once was. It now shows inside the newlyweds room with a perfect view of their bed. As time goes on Vanessa becomes obsessed with this new couple and brings Roland into her voyeuristic ways. Her way of coping. This begins to spark something between the couple. Roland and Vanessa start to fall in love again. They have found this strange and painful commonality that is bringing them back together. They befriend this couple so that they can be apart of what they have been watching. They arent doing this for sex, they are doing this to become close again. To find the love they once had. One night after Vanessa and the young wife go shopping, Roland coming home from another day of drinking and writing runs into the couple and notices that they are both dressed very similar to him and Vanessa. This is the turning point of the story. In an attempt to understand what Vanessa needs, Roland confronts her with no success. Roland begins to wonder. Wonder why when he decides to come home early, that Vanessa is not in the flat. He looks into the next room and Vanessa has gone over to seduce the young husband. Roland crashes in, beats the husband and finally confronts Vanessa with the secret she cannot bear to utter. She is barren. She cannot hold children after numerous attempts and this is what has led to the angst, and resentment between them. This is also a turning point because now that Vanessa has heard the word Barren, she is faced with having to accept it. Roland all the while has found his story and the closing scene is of him finishing his final page. The title… By the Sea.

This was one of the most elegant and beautiful movies I have ever watched. I know that from the description you may think that I am crazy but I really am not. This is a story of the saddest people in the entire world. It’s about a couple who were so in love at one time, lost each other, but will not bring themselves to leave each other. This was one of the things I found so stunning. I am a firm believer in being happily unmarried, than unhappily married however, this is reality for so many couples and Jolie has made that known and thrown it out there for us to see. Her characters were amazing and she and Pitt executed them perfectly. I was very excited to see them in another movie together as they have not starred in one, as a couple since Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Their dynamic is mind-blowing. You can see that they work well together and feed off of each other in a way that many celebrity husband and wives cannot. I have not seen a couple share so much angst for each other since Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road and this movie is reminiscent of that as well. Jolie did a fabulous job as director and writer. She came up with a story that is not easy to tell and not easy to write. She made this story one to be heard.

As far as acting goes Jolie embodied such a deep rooted angst and jealousy that just vibrated off of her. When you first see her and hear her first lines “It smells like fish.” you know this is a woman who does not have time for childish games or being apart of  the general population.Jolie, who as an actress is a force to be reckoned with has really grasped the concept of feeling weak, of feeling little and alone. Pitt was outstanding. He captured the very essence of what a struggling writer really was. He was a husband scorned because of something that he could not control. All he wanted was to have his wife want him and need him.

This was such a fantastic movie and one that I have been waiting to see. I will be purchasing it tomorrow! If you want to see a movie that will make you weep, but also make you wonder and keep you guessing I highly recommend it. I was one of the most damaged and beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Lights Out: A movie review

Hey readers. Over my weekend Kyle and I went and saw the newest Horror movie Lights Out and oh my gosh! It was amazing…

Lights Out

Directed by: David F. Sandberg

Starring: Teresa Palmer and Maria Bello

Lights Out is a story about a family plagued by a shadowy creature names Diana. When its dark Diana likes to come out and wreek havoc on this family and she has been for years. It started with Sophie, the mother who is victim to sever depression as a child and meets/ befriends a strange girl who is allergic to the sun, this is Diana. When Sophie has her first child Rebecca, and Rebecca’s father abandons the family Diana comes back and begins to bother the family of 2. Years later when Rebecca is all grown up and her mother is remarried with another child, is where the story starts.

Sophie’s husband has another late night at work and Diana is waiting for him. Leaving behind Sophie and little boy Martin, Diana makes her way back into the family’s life ready to get rid of all of them except Sophie.

The movie is all about how and why Diana chooses this family and how to get rid of her once and for all.

OH MY GOSH!!! This was one of the best Horror movies I have seen since The Conjuring. It combines all of the necessary components that make up a scary movie. There is pain both physical and emotional. There is great “jumping” moments in which you are startled and the story line is horrifying. I would have to give this movie 5 stars!!! It will make you think, scream, and maybe even cry like I did. I would recommend it to only those who love to have the crap scared out of them!

Room: A Movie Review

Hey everyone. I have been in a bit of a funk the last 2 days but today began a new quarter at work for my husband, which means changes for me too. Days are now mine while he works, which may mean more blogging because now I don’t know what to do with my time… Anyway, this evening I decided to watch a movie that took the Oscars by storm.

Title: Room

Release Date: September 4 2015 at the Telluride Film Festival.

Starring Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and William H Macy

Directed by: Lenny Abrhamson

“When I was 4 I didnt know about the world, but now me and Ma we’re gonna live in it forever.”

Room is about a young woman who we call Ma and her son Jack. They live in a tiny room with no visitors except a man named Old Nick who visits at night. Jack was raised in this tiny room since before he was born. That’s because Ma was taken by Old Nick when she was 17 and hidden in a shed, only to give birth to Old Nicks child who she names Jack. On Jack’s 5th birthday Ma decides to tell him her story and decides its time to trick Old Nick into getting Jack out of “room” so he can get help. Plan 1, place hot rags on his face to make him feel like he is burning up and needs to go to the hospital. Plan fails and Old Nick goes and finds antibiotics for him. Plan 2, the next day Ma teaches Jack how to roll up in a rug and pretend to be dead so that Old Nick will take him out of “room” and he can run for help. Plan 2 works and our little hero gets himself and Ma to safety.

Things in their new life are hard. There are different colors, temperatures, and people. Jack is trying his best to adjust and so is Ma, but “Ma is so sad and decides she wants to go up to heaven “boing” but she forgot about me and the aliens sent her back down to earth CRASH.” Ma goes to the hospital and Jack learns to let in his grandma. He begins to love and trust those around him and when Ma finally comes home from the hospital Jack asks ma if he can go see “room”. Aprehensivly she agrees and they are escourted by police to “room”. But room is different and all of the only things jack has ever known are gone, minus a few small details. Ma, asks jack if they can please go. Jack nods his head and begins saying goodbye to whats left of room. “Goodbye Plant, Goodbye chair number 1″…

This was the most heartbreaking film of 2 humans, 19 years between them, trying to survive, being freed and growing up together. Brie Larson won Best Actress for this role and It is so well deserved. She was the embodiment of a woman who has had some arrested development, because taken at 17 and locked away for 7 years will stop the mental growth of anyone. Ma is a heroine because she gives a voice to those who have been taken. She shows you what pure love for her child is. How selfless she had to be to keep Jack alive and well long enough to get them to safety. Jack was played by a boy named Jacob Tremblay who makes your heart ache when you look at him. His long brown hair is unkempt, his big brown eyes look at the world for the first time with such wonderment. He is a boy who had to grow for 5 years in complete secrecy and then really begin his life in “earth” where he can relearn how to fully live.

I have never watched a movie where I cried throughout the whole duration. I cried for Ma, a girl who just tried to help an older man in a time of need. i cried for Jack, a little boy who only knew “room” for 5 years of his life and who also has to live with a Ma who loves him but is always afraid. I cried for Ma’s family. 7 years without their child only to be reunited with her and their grandson as well. This is a movie that I may not watch again because I am still reeling from it. It combines a Love story (Ma and Jack) mixed with suspense and alot of emotions that are still flying around.

If you have not seen this movie, I have to recommened it. Its Beautifully Damaged. It will make you happy and sad and still trying to figure it all out after the credits begin to roll. This won many Oscars and for good reason. I personally will give it 5 stars. Its stunning!

How to be single: a movie review

how-to-be-single-movie-2016.jpg

How to be single

Release Date: February 12 2016

Directed by: Christian Ditter

How to be single is a comedy that follows four women who are all connected in the best kind of ways.

Lucy, Played by Alison Brie is a young woman looking for Mr. Right, Right NOW! She begins spending her time in the bar below her house where she meets a bartender who has more than just lust for her.

Alice, played by Dakota Johnson is a young woman working at a law firm who decides her boyfriend and her need some time apart to find themselves, little does she know that not only will he want her back but another man will want her too.

Robin, Played by Rebel Wilson is a happy-go-lucky Aussie who loves booze, sex and fun. She befriends Alice and they take their own alcohol filled trip down the rabbit hole

and finally Meg, Played by Leslie Mann is Alice’s older sister, a OBGYN who hasn’t wanted to have a family but when one encounter with a baby makes her change her mind she used IVF, gets pregnant and falls in love with a guy who works with her sister.

This was so much better than I expected. Upon seeing previews I knew I was going to laugh, little did I know that I would be sobbing at certain points. There was so much happiness, with some sadness sprinkled on top. There were moments where I laughed out loud and moments where I cried uncontrollably.

I loved every aspect of this movie. The cast was priceless and wonderful. The characters they played were just as amazing and made me wish I could live that life for 1 day. This is a movie you want to watch when you are in any kind of funk.

I give this movie 5 stars for Cast, Screenplay, Plot, Setting! All of it and when I go on my date this weekend I will be buying it!

Tim Burton’s Films a Visual List

Hi again! So while I was sitting with my husband I saw my best friend shared my blog on her timeline via Facebook!!! It made my entire day so I wanted to do another fun post! This is purely my opinion and not the opinion of anyone else but I will be sharing something very exciting to me!

Tim Burton’s Films ranked Best to Worst. In my opinion I think that all of his films have something special about them but that does not mean there are movies of his that are not mind blowing. This will only be in pictures, I wanted to play around with the collage effect. Hope you enjoy these!

Well there you have it! This is my visual list of Tim Burton’s films from best to worst. Phew! That was a challenge. I hope you enjoyed this!
